This is the second Pat Amsden book I’ve read and it was fun to once again follow Maxine the catering sleuth through the twists and turns of solving a murder. This time she is hired to cater the Castle Society’s fundraiser that is being held in a Canadian castle that was once owned by wealthy Scotsman. She hears stories about the place being haunted, and when a guest is hurled from the high staircase to his death by a creature that looks a whole lot like a ghost, Maxine isn’t too sure what to believe. Her on-and-off boyfriend, Detective Patrick Shannon, is called in and I was happy to also see a reappearance of Grandma Ellie. With a convoluted scheme involving a development company and an environmental action group—and don’t forget the dog—the mystery unfolds with humor, plot twists and just enough romance. A wonderful read for Halloween! I really enjoyed it, even though it made me hungry for delicious appetizers and chocolates. If you love cozy mystery novels, you'll love it. It can also be read as a stand alone novel, which is nice, if you haven't read the other books. Best of all, it has easy and delicious-sounding recipes at the end! Grab some chocolates and curl up with this cozy mystery. You won't be disappointed.
I read only the first few pages of this novel before deleting it from my . I felt that it read more like a first draft or an outline than a finished product. The descriptions were sketchy. The "big murder scene" was so spare on details that I just shrugged. I can't recommend the book at all.
These book keeps you interested from beginning to end
This story is about a caterer, Maxine, who keeps getting herself into trouble, first because she witnesses a murder and then because she can’t stop herself from investigating. I liked the characters and the relationship between Maxine and the police detective who wants to keep her safe. It was fun trying to figure out who the killer was. I also especially liked reading the details of Maxine’s catering business.
Pat Amsden must like chocolate, as her lady sleuth offers chocolate up to everyone, even environmental protestors out in the rainy autumn weather. It is Halloween, with ghostly parties which she caters. One party has a ghostly visitor, which frightens a man enough to cause him to fall to his death off the staircase. Add in kidnapped dogs, a Canadian policeman/boyfriend, and a large cast of characters, and this mystery is all set to keep you guessing until the end.
