Emergencies in the Merambas G F J Moir 9781742842295 Books

Emergencies in the Merambas is the real thing; a true novel written in the classic style which you won't find much anymore. Author G.F.J. Moir creates an amazingly detailed and completely fictional setting. The Merambas are a group of islands somewhere in the South Pacific. The talented author creates a fictional tropical paradise with its own culture and history and even its own language. Everything is so realistic and believable that you may find yourself just double checking a world atlas to see if the Merambas are real or if it is really a place located in the author's imagination. Emergencies in the Merambas is a very "visual" story. You will find yourself lost in a tropical island adventure which is very easy to visualize, thanks to the wonderful writing style of Moir.

The main character, John Hathaway finds that there is a price to pay for living in a paradise. There is a trade-off. John soon learns that the culture of this isolated tropical island has many contradictions. The culture of the Merambas are dominated by the native Merambi. They are both modern and primitive; prudish and promiscuous. John finds it difficult to blend in with this culture of contradictions which relies heavily on an unusual mix of spiritual beliefs derived from the many cultures that have touched the Merambas. But John also finds that the Merambi are a well-mannered and loveable people.

As the story moves along, the author skillfully blends in a blossoming romance between the main character John and a gorgeous Swedish woman he met briefly as she was leaving for Sweden. The author does a wonderful job of describing what it feels like to be stricken by "love at first sight." John is lovesick as he awaits the return of the woman of his dreams. However he must also stay focused on a most unique and exciting task he has accepted. It is a very delicate undertaking that involves a spiritual document that is highly revered by the Merambi population. All these things evolve amidst political unrest and natural disasters. This all makes for a unique and memorable reading experience.
Highly recommended.

This book has a most interesting, detailed and well thought out plot. The intricacies of the story and the suspense keeps the reader spell bound.
Highly recommended.
I really enjoyed this book and thought it was really exciting. I love these types of books and they always keep my eyes open wide. Thanks so much. Great writer!
I soon became immersed in the lives of the locals and expats, swept along by the undercurrents of intrigue and the enthusiasm of the young linguist. John Hathaway is a most likeable character. Though perhaps his background and the reason for him heading to the Merambas might incline prospective readers to expect him to be “geeky”, he is more accurately described as “genki”. The rapid twists and turns of the plot are at variance with what one would imagine in a languid tropical paradise. “Emergencies in the Merambas” is a thoroughly enjoyable read. I totally agree with Tippell who closes his review with “Even at the end one feels the story is not yet over.” I do hope that Moir will enable us to meet with John Hathaway once again in the not-too-distant future.
This book was recommended by a friend and I definitely enjoyed reading this book. Actually, i haven't read a book like this. The story itself is very unique and wonderful. You will definitely enjoy reading this book.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I love they way it had me hooked before the end of the first chapter. It had a tight and well-thought out plot with a lot of surprises along the way, as well as well-rounded characters that felt alive and genuine. And, as I’m sure many others have already stated, the main character, John, is likeable, to say the least. It was fascinating to follow him along all the ups and downs, twists and turns. All in all it was a great read, and I’d recommend it to anyone out there who’s craving some intrigue, suspense, and romance. Look no further, you’ve got it all in “Emergencies in Merambas”.
At the beginning, we meet Mrs. Murray-Blakesden, and our linguist Mr. Hathaway, an Australian, who has taken a post in the strange tropical paradise of the Merambas, where everyone speaks a variant of Latin. The author is knowledgeable and conversant in at least 3 languages, which gives the book a polished believability.Religion, education and National identity are among the many targets of Moir's wit and humor. When we finally get to the Merambas we are engrossed in the intricacies of a plot of suspense and intrigue--with our linguist immersed in the thick of it. The paradox of a tropical paradise surrounded by a storm of strange intrigue, wit, and humor is refreshing. Moir is a writer of incredible brilliance, and this book is an uncommon treasure!
